What is SEO?

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In short, it is a ‘behind the scenes’ way of helping your website ‘talk’ to Google and other search engines to get it as close to the first page as possible. Wouldn’t it be nice to have your website (or a specific page on your website) come up on the first page of a Google search? That’s what SEO can do! By ‘optimizing’ your website (and utilizing many other strategies too) your website can be as close to the top as possible. Want an example? CLICK HERE

Why do I need SEO?

Think of SEO as another tool in your marketing arsenal. If done correctly, over time your website can get great placement on Google and other search engines. The closer you are to the first page (and high up on the first page too!) the more calls your business will get. Imagine you own a used car business in Oshkosh, WI. Suppose someone types in ‘cheap cars in Wisconsin’ on Google. That person is going to get over 1,000,000 results spread over hundreds of thousand of Google pages. Now imagine your business is at the top of the first page of those results? You are going to get a lot of calls! SEO can make that happen…

What are the pros and cons of SEO?

Good question! The key goal of SEO is to get to the top of Google. Once you’re there – it’s free. Google does not charge you to be at the top of page 1 or the bottom of page 10,000. This is a huge advantage. The disadvantages are it takes time and a lot of money to achieve any real results –  and a very, very long time to get to the coveted first page. The good news is that getting to the first page can be done with the right SEO tactics and SEO strategy.

Is SEO expensive?

It can be, but it can also be affordable. It really depends on what you want to optimize. An example would be: If a used car company wanted to optimize their whole site for the term ‘used cars’, that would be very time consuming and very costly. A better strategy might be to optimize a single page devoted to used ‘Toyota Corolla.’ This would be infinitely cheaper and have less competition too.

Is SEO the same as PPC?

Good question. The answer is NO! These are two entirely different things. SEO is the process of ‘optimizing’ your website or a single page to show up in a list of businesses. These are what Google calls the ‘organic’ results. They are usually found on a Google page just below the local map listings on the left hand side. PPC (or pay-per-click) are the results that are usually on the top left (usually 2 or 3 listings) and also the entire right side of a Google search page. To see an example of SEO, CLICK HERE

Is SEO marketing more important than PPC marketing?

No! They are just different forms of marketing your business to Google (and other search engine) users. Think of it as having a website, business cards, and a yellow page ad. All three are important but each one serves a different purpose.
